Âme
Frank Wiedemann, born 1973, grew up in a town called Karlsruhe in the Southwest of Germany. From there, he developed his vision of electronic music fusing influences from Detroit, Chicago, New York, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Paris into a unique and soulful style of club music.
After playing keyboards in several bands he started his career as a DJ and producer with the release of the song “Tranespotting” in 2001 as Soul FC (with Stefan Lechner) on Compost Records, which left a mark in the electronic scene. Only a year later, he joined forces with Kristian Beyer and started the project Âme, which brought him to Jazzanova’s label Sonar Kollektiv. The two developed a sound that was easily accessible without ever losing deepness, complexity and a distinct twist, and remixes for Jazzanova, Roy Ayers, Rodamaal, Mr. V and many more enabled the duo in their early years to show their various disguises under the rooftop of House.
In 2005, Frank went on to found the electronic record label Innervisions together with Kristian Beyer and Dixon. They chose the name of to the belief that all art forms, not just music, are a materialized sphere of ideas. The encounter with such a materialized sphere of ideas in a book, an exhibition or a track triggers certain sensations and sensibilities. Following on from this, an inner vision not only allows sensations and sensibilities to evolve inside one’s mind. It keeps on spinning from there to generate new ideas. On Innervisions, Frank Wiedemann released numerous singles and tracks with Âme, such as “Mifune” or their genre cross-border hit “Rej” in 2005 as well as remixes for Osunlades “Envision” or “Howling” in 2012.
With Henrik Schwarz, Dixon and Kristian Beyer, Frank Wiedemann had also started to perform as “A Critical Mass”, a live project that found them reworking the creative DNA of each other’s songs in real-time. He toured with them for a full year in 2009, and even performed a live score for the film “Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari“ at Jetztmusik Festival/Timewarp, Mannheim or at the Roundhouse in London within the context of Ron Arad’s “Curtain Call” project. They released their genre-spanning mix “The Grandfather Paradox” on BBE Records.
Out of this collaboration the project Schwarzmann with Henrik Schwarz evolved in 2011. Since then the duo appears together in exclusive live performances based on improvisations rooted in house and techno music. As the cherry on the cake they occasionally host “Schwarzmann Soirees” where they invite numerous guest singers and musicians (e.g. Bugge Wesseltoft, Kahil El’Zabar, Ben Westbeech, Pat Thomas, Robert Owens) to jam and improvise for several hours. The first soiree took place at the legendary music club “Trouw” in Amsterdam just a week before its closing.
In 2012, Frank Wiedemann released the song “Howling“ with Australian musician and singer Ry X which became an instant underground hit. The special chemistry between them in various studio environments and on stage led to their continuous collaboration as Howling. With Jens Kuross as third band member for live shows they started touring and recording their debut album “Sacred Ground” (NinjaTune / Modeselektor’s Monkeytown Records) in 2015. This record title became also the eponym of their very own boutique festival north of Berlin, curated by both, showing their ideas of an ideal gathering for friends, music lovers and open minded people. Their second album “Colure” just dropped during summer of 2020, in the midst of the Corona Pandemic. The word Colure is an astronomical term describing the point where two celestial poles align. Thus, for the two musicians, the whole project is about two different poles coming together: Frank Wiedemanns hypnotizing electronic productions and Ry X’s tender songwriter skills. Like on their former record, the two managed to create organic soundscapes by combining danceable electro beats with warm vocals.
In 2013 Frank Wiedemann worked for the second time with members of the Staatsbalett Berlin. In collaboration with Marcel Dettmann he’s being part of the project “Masse” and composed the soundtrack for a choreography of former prima ballerina Nadja Saidakova. The piece took place at Berlins club “Berghain” and featured a stage design by contemporary artist Nobert Bisky.
In 2017, Frank founded the music label Bigamo Musik. The label was designed to release electronic music and artists that would not necessarily fit his other label Innervisions, but that would appeal to his non-house-musical taste. One key requirement for any release is also the ability to perform the creations live on stage. Releases on Bigamo include albums by Fred und Luna, Keope, Abrão, Joram Feitsma, Al Pagoda, as well as a remix series.
As a composer, he created the soundtrack for the film “Symphony Of Now” together with other musicians of Berlin’s electronic music scene. In the film, a range of urban panoramas, personal ciphers and nighttime stories unfold under the guidance of director Johannes Schaff. Revisiting the avantgarde approach of Walther Ruttmann’s Berlin – Die Sinfonie der Großstadt, the 1927 film that describes a typical day in Berlin, it offers a kaleidoscopic sequence of scenes and images from nighttime Berlin. At the premiere of Symphony of Now at the film festival Berlinale in 2018, the soundtrack was performed live by the artists, curated by Frank Wiedemann.
Frank Wiedemann expands his production with more collaborations. In fall 2020, after DJ Tennis’ label Life and Death drops the lead single of their 15 years compilation with first ever release of Schwarzmann, very shortly thereafter Frank Wiedemann appears on Whomadewho’s new album twice, soon to be followed by a release on Drumpoet of a collaboration with Roman Flügel (Dial; Alter Ego, Playhouse),
Frank Wiedemann continues to perform as a solo live musician under his own name or as Âme (Live) and is being booked worldwide to renowned clubs such as “Berghain” or “Fabric” as well as many big festivals. His performances usually include not only his own tracks but also large parts of improvisation. Apart from spontaneous shows with Mathew Jonson or KINK he also participates in the project Circle of Live by Sebastian Mullaert where up to five electronic live musicians meet for an evening or night on stage and jam with their electronic music equipment. His latest LP release “Colure” with Howling is anticipated to be toured all over the world in 2021.
Trikk
Trikk is an internationally acclaimed producer and DJ, originally from Porto (Portugal) and now based in Berlin. His work with Dixon & Âme’s Innervisions label together with his busy touring schedule have launched him onto the global stage as part of the next gen of underground house music.
With a consistent drip feed of biannual releases since 2011, Trikk has avoided the pressures of social media, rather focussing on a carefully considered output. This creation of space between producer and audience encourages the flow of new ideas, giving freedom to steer clear of the latest trends and expectations. With each release he aims to demonstrate his development as an artist, taking the time to properly digest influences and inspirations.
This approach also carries through to his DJ performances. He has been winning over audiences around the globe with sets that showcase his unique perspective, free from outside pressures and conventions. His sets are patient with a delicate sense of timing, well-formed musical selection, flawless harmonic mixing and dynamic storytelling.
Since his relocation to Berlin, the hub of Europe’s electronic music scene, he has been able to reach a wider audience with access to some of the best clubs and festivals in the world as well as increasing his worldwide appearances. He’s also a staple on the Innervisions label showcase events and has fast become a favorite with fans.
His musical output has also garnered attention. Since his first EP for the label, “Florista” a playful rhythmic experimentation with hypnotic synth lines, he has continued to release music that resonates both with fans and artists.
His 2017 double EP “Mundo Ritual” expands on the use of African rooted percussion with more powerful electronics. Pristine production, attention to detail and the careful use of silence creates a dramatic release that exhibits a clear progression from his earlier productions.
In 2018’s “Vilara EP” Trikk shifts his focus from rhythm to crescendoing melody in a pair of synth driven compositions. Clearly designed with specific pinnacle moments in mind, he adds to a carefully crafted and steadily evolving discography that reflects his experiences and journey as an artist as it continues to grow.
With four years of close affiliation with the Innervisions team, Trikk has become an integral part of the label’s lineup and is helping to shape the sound of the next wave of artists. With more releases in the pipeline, we can expect new original work, exciting collaborations and performances to follow.
