Nilsson Sings Nilsson Presents: The Point
Harry Nilsson’s 1971 album The Point! Is a musical fable about Oblio, the sole round-headed person in a land where everything and everyone must have a (literal) point. It tells the story of his exclusion, exile and the lessons he learns along the way. The album was adapted into an animated movie by Fred Wolf and has remained a cult classic ever since. Come hear this epic fable with music and narration performed live in its entirety, featuring his son, Kiefo Nilsson, on lead vocals. Backing him is a twelve-piece ensemble comprised of members of the Bay Area’s adventurous Awesöme Orchestra. Writer, Humorist and Bay Area native, Mallory Ortberg joins as the Narrator, making this unique, once-in-a-lifetime event not to be missed!
Kiefo Nilsson (lead vocals, electric bass, co-producer) is an in-demand vocalist and multi-instrumentalist based in Southern California. He has worked with such artists as Glen Campbell, Van Dyke Parks, Neko Case, and many more. The Nilsson Sings Nilsson project aims to preserve and promote the legacy of his father’s catalogue by performing live renditions of his music, much of which has otherwise never before been performed live.
Mallory Ortberg (narration) is an acclaimed writer and humorist based in Oakland. She launched the popular website The Toast with Nicole Cliffe. Her debut book, Texts From Jane Eyre was published in 2014. She currently writes Dear Prudence for Slate.com and recently launched an email newsletter called The Shatner Chatner.
Whether they’re playing music by Stravinsky or Sly and the Family Stone, doing a BART flash mob or flooding the stage of the Fox Theater with musicians, Awesöme Orchestra seeks out musical adventures. Founded in 2013 by conductor David Möschler at a West Oakland warehouse, they have had over 2000 local musicians play with them since then, including recordings and performances with artists such as Green Day, Sly and The Family Stone, Van Dyke Parks, Casey Crescenzo and The Dear Hunter, Beats Antique, among many others. Their mission is to make awesome orchestral adventures accessible to players and the public.
