Cosmo’s Midnight
Built on a love for music that has pushed genre and expectation, COSMO’S MIDNIGHT have developed a sound and production style that has made them one of Australia’s most celebrated duos.
Since their inception, the brothers Cosmo and Patrick Liney have chased a shared hunger for experimentation and playfulness within the dance and pop worlds, culminating in a strong body of work that has solidified Cosmo’s Midnight as formidable champions of Australian-made electronic music.
There’s something naturally immersive about the sonic realm Cosmo’s Midnight creates with each project. Fusing both electronic and groove-based influences; speaking to both brothers’ own unique flair.
Across their albums What Comes Next (2018) and the ARIA-nominated Yesteryear (2020), Cosmo’s Midnight have flexed significant production and writing chops – speaking to the DIY beginnings, and expansion of creative vision as their confidence and natural dynamic as musical partners has also grown over the years.
This dynamic has once again shone, with the creation of Cosmo’s Midnight’s third studio album, Stop Thinking And Start Feeling, due for release later this year.
The process of making Stop Thinking And Start Feeling picked up almost immediately following the release of Yesteryear in 2020. Written over the backdrop of almost three years of writing and experimentation in Australia, Los Angeles and London. Making this record while traveling and collaborating put Cosmo’s Midnight in a creative mindset that was incredibly liberating. While having a break from touring they conceived their new album as a result of being able to simply play around with style, free of any expectation – industry, personal, or otherwise.
A project that became a therapeutic vessel as it has been a new chapter of creativity, Stop Thinking And Start Feeling channels a bright horizon of unknowns: post-isolation travel, distance from loved ones, a return to touring and a resurgence of energy.
“We thought we may as well take the opportunity of being at home every day to just start writing the next album,” Pat says.
“It wasn’t like we were conceiving an idea from that moment, we were just putting together a moodboard, musically. It was really interesting to see how we were diving into genres that we had written in before. It was really exciting to branch out.”
Teasing their new project with choice single drops in 2022 in ‘Can’t Do Without My Baby’ and the Tkay Maidza collaboration, ‘Bang My Line’, Cosmo’s Midnight have shown off the fun found in leaning into the music they fell in love with as young music fans – it’s in reveling in this euphoria that has driven Stop Thinking And Start Feeling.
Here, Cosmo’s Midnight wanted to recreate the feeling of catharsis and pure happiness they felt discovering artists like Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Underworld for the first time, for a whole new wave of listeners.
Stop Thinking And Start Feeling is, in its purest form, an invitation to escape and lose yourself in the music. Taking inspiration from genre trailblazers and innovators such as Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King, Chaka Khan and Rufus; as well as masters of melody and world building like Fleetwood Mac, Cosmo’s Midnight construct an atmosphere that celebrates music at its emotive core. Moreover, the attraction and appeal of this emotion that led Cosmo’s Midnight to embark on their artistic journey in the first place.
“We want people to listen to the music and feel in touch with the innateness of the music’s feeling,” Cosmo explains.
“We try to create a world that you can get in, insert yourself into; whether it be escapism or fantasising about being somewhere you’d rather be. It’s a way to transport you.”
Stop Thinking And Start Feeling asks the listener to do one thing: feel. This is an album that urges one to switch off the critical part of their brain, instead being led by each pulsating beat, vibrant progression and beautifully hypnotic beat pattern. Tapping into the innocence that this sort of music made them feel as young music fans, Cosmo’s Midnight returned to the sounds of their youth in reinventing that feeling for a new generation of audience.
“When we write music, we’re writing music to feel a type of way,” Pat adds.
“If we’re feeling down, we’ll write happy music. If I’m feeling angry, I’ll write happy music. It’s escapist, in a way. You’re writing music to create the feeling you want to have.”
The transformative feeling that has permeated Cosmo’s Midnight’s music over the years has been reflected in the growth of the duo as a performance unit; dominating sold out stages in Australia and overseas, as well as staking their claim as Australian festival favourites with numerous appearances at the likes of Splendour In The Grass, Laneway Festival and more.
With over 500 million streams and numerous Gold and Platinum certified records to their name, Cosmo’s Midnight’s sphere of influence and continued impact is one that breeds a natural excitement when it comes to looking at what’s coming next.
Cosmo’s Midnight, in freeing themselves up to approach music in a way that allowed them simply to feel and not overthink things, have engaged new creative muscle.
Stop Thinking And Start Feeling represents the duo broadening their horizons, challenging themselves as songwriters, musicians and vocalists in ways not heard on previous records. And as a result, the record is the most complete portrait of Cosmo and Pat as creatives to date.
