Sinkane is an artist with a real stake in our current cultural and political climate. Born in London to Sudanese parents, raised in Ohio, and now calling New York City home, the former skate punk turned afro funk whiz Ahmed Gallab refines his sound and message to peak form on his seventh studio album, Dépaysé, set for release on May 31st, 2019 via City Slang. Dépaysé — French for “to be removed from one’s habitual surroundings” — is today introduced with a video for anthemic first single “Everybody,” directed by Bruno Ferreira. Filmed at Brazil’s world renowned samba school in Rio de Janeiro, Escola de Samba Paraíso do Tuiuti, the new video stars its local performers and is a testimony to the power of passion and dancing to overcome repression. Gallab says “Everybody” is “dedicated to the brave men, women and children fighting against oppression in places like Brazil, Sudan, and all over the world #تسقط_بس”
Dépaysé is the follow-up to Sinkane’s acclaimed 2017 album Life & Livin’ It, which earned the band their national TV debut on Conan, an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert, and worldwide acclaim from outlets, including Pitchfork, The Guardian, New York Magazine Vulture, The FADER, Vice, ELLE Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Magnet, The Washington Post, and more.
Xiomara’s vocal styling flows effortlessly along the Jazz, Soul, R&B and Hip-Hop spectrum. With influences ranging from Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms through Blues and Classical, hers is a unique sound, only partially explained by her Oakland, California roots. As an artist and producer, Xiomara strives to create sounds that bridge the gap between past and future.
